Secrecy's sophomore album and every bit as good as Art In Motion...just more of that Romantic Teutonic Technothrash that I can't get enough of lately.

Depressive Age - First Depression
Amazing...I cannot begin to describe my love for this album...a prog-tech thrash band that actually put as much care into the vocal pitch and placement as they did the guitar lines (Watchtower, Sieges Even I'm looking in your direction). Depressive Age, much like brethren Secrecy, were a desperate yelp of creativity during the death throes of thrash metal during the early 90's. Not only were they extraordinary musicians, but they were extraordinarily gifted songwriters, branching into areas that certainly must've been most uncomfortable for your common breed thrasher.

Secrecy - Art In Motion
Technical German thrash that at it's best recalls the Baroque chordal sensibility of Blackie era Root (I'm especially reminded of Black Seal for some reason), setting this band apart even further are the Buddy Lackey-esque vocals of Peter Dartin. I love love love the solos on this album!

Unleashed Power - Quintet Of Spheres
Like a teched-the-fuck-out Rage...specifically their Secrets In A Weird World album. Yeah, it's that good. Thanks to the always unbelievably great thrashmania80 blog for this gem.

Archaicus - Beneath The Horizon
Otherworldly death metal with an agonizingly cryptic atmosphere. If this doesn’t make you want to reach for the liquid Drain-O and take a swig, you might be too happy of a person.

Mercy - Witchburner
So the new Candlemass is pretty good guys and it's got me listening to their past albums + stuff from their formative years leading me to Marcolin's pre-Candlemass band...you can already tell he was developing the "evil monk" persona, especially with the lyrics of Pervert Priest..."I drink your wine, I eat your food, when I do house calls, I'm in the mood"..."I fuck a nun, she makes me cum"....oooh Messiah, hilarious and blasphemous how can you not love it?!?

Sortilege - Metamorphose
Some more AMAZING cover artwork and AMAZING tunes courtesy of French bastards Sortilege. Metamorphose was their debut album from way back in 1984 and is nothing but pure class through and through...stinging powerful vox and riffs to bang your head for days. Probably the best French export since Courvoisier.
Bokrug - Ancient Horrors And Bloody Visions
The Great water-lizard; before which they danced horribly when the moon was gibbous. Image courtesy of yog-blogsoth...musick courtesy of some Argentinian nut.

Wolf Spider - Drifting In The Sullen Sea
One of my favorite prog-thrash releases ever...These Polish thrashers really deliver imaginative deadly weird high-octane hooks that make the seas not so much sullen as electrifying...not to mention the endearingly wild vocals of Jacky Piotrowski...the man is just unstoppable. Otherworldly thrash for the underworld.

Feral primeval athropormorphic death metal that will leave you in a bloody heap...Schismatic just drips with atmosphere...riffs of destruction seethe and hiss like billous fluids pussing from a stuck hog. You really can't expect any less from a Polish death metal band circa '93, now can you?

W.C. Fields - Temperance Lectures
I've been in a major W.C. Field's mode lately, which jogged my memory to the fact that I had this fun little album squirreled away on my HD. Enjoy ol'Bill's libidinous rants and raves....what's your stalling er I mean calling?

Speaking of The Mezmerist's drug-addled Black Sabbath worship, how about Dwarr's debut from '85? Parts of this sound like Planet Caravan...parts sound like The Flying Luttenbachers...the ultimate WTF album.

The Mezmerist - The Innocent, The Forsaken, The Guilty
It's like the most drug-addled Black Sabbath album that never was...The Mezmerist's vocals defy explanation...an under-underground classick of the SpookProg genre.

Geometrical Finnish Techy Jazz Death that will tickle that primeval locale in your brainstem. Thanx to Guturral Munk blogspot for this winner.

Psychicthrob - Bursting Dementia
So I thought why not post another Gorguts related band to go along with Purulence. Psychicthrob was bass player Steve (not to be confused with Steeve) Cloutier's band before he joined up with Monsieur LeMay and old bandmate Stephane Provencher (who drummed in pre-Psychicthrob band Damaged). You know Cloutier, he of the clunking idiosyncratic bass lines that meandered and perplexed on Obscura and From Wisdom To Hate. Well 1991's Bursting Dementia demo is nothing like that....basically this is Leprosy/Spiritual Healing worship with thrashy vox. Very good stuff with excellent sound for a demo, and some interesting tech/atmospheric parts that remind me of Morgue's Eroded Thoughts even though I'm not entirely sure why.
Purulence
Thought I'd post a couple of tunes from Big Steeve's pre-Gorguts band Purulence...disgustingly filthy old school death with a distinct Profanatica/Incatation feel. The second track is definitely more epic and atmospheric in a style that resembles Steeve's performance on Gorguts' Obscura.
Sider - Labyrinth
What if Watchtower and Dream Theater got together and had an insane Bulgarian technothrash baby? You need no longer wonder about this...

R.I.P. Big Steeve
So sad to say that Steeve Hurdle of Gorguts and Negative passed on. An incredible guitar player and unique prescence in the metal world, Hurdle will most certainly be missed. RIP Big Steeve
