Blood Storm - Ancient Wraith of KU

Just what is a KU and what stirs it's ancient wrath you may ask??

"The Ku are those entities that have died violent deaths. The Ku's hieroglyphs have many meanings, the foremost of which is Black Magick. As an ideograph, the Ku is at least 3,000 years old, and the cult enshrines a system analogous to the voodoo mysteries of the 256 venoms used obstensively for acquiring great wealth and for vengeance. The basic concept is preserved in the Yi king where it appears as the 18th hexagram. Now the two elemental trigrams that comprise the hexagram are those of Earth and Air. Now the superpositioning of the Earth trigram above that of the Air suggests suffocation or choking, and the spirit/entity of the Ku are the vehicles of the Ophidian venoms which devour or suffocate the living on Earth in violent deaths. That whole thing of Ophidian venoms devouring is the 256 venoms, that's their virus, yo see its another stage of virus through occultism. In popular belief the Ku is a malignant honer of the dark and snatches souls from the dead. The Ku is in connection to the cult of the black snake, also known as the mystery of zombieism, which is like Haitian voodoo. Hence the sorcerer extracts the venoms from the Ophidian current and manifests from its extraterrestrial origin to descend and eat the brains of men. So that's the virus it's transmitting. That's a basic structure of what the Ku actually is."

Njiqahdda - Grain III

The ever prolific (and ever unpronounceable) Njiqahdda have released something of a revelation here with this little ep. Somewhere between atmospheric death metal and mathrock with droning Morrissey as troll-style vocals. But with the feel of climaxing black metal just there but slipping through your reach. I'm loving it big time and am a little bit surprised at the effect it's having over me. Hypnotic, laid back...powerful. This is just about a perfect sound, do go over to their bandcamp where nearly all eee Recordings are available for your perusal.
Oppose the mainstream dammit!

Illogo - When Liquids Stay Dry

This just might be the creepiest cover art ever. Hard to describe band, but the music fits the artwork so you can judge this book by it's cover...Erik Thomas of Teeth of the Divine zine describes these Italians as "Yakuza meets Circle Takes the Square meets DHG meets Isis meets Japanese Torture Comedy Hour meets Jean Michele Jarre". I only like half those things, and I pretty much only like half of this, but its is scritchin' that itch for the bizarre pretty good at this moment.

Beherit - Electric Doom Synthesis

Nuclear Holocausto Vengeance's second stab at dark ambient (after the somewhat forgettable and unpronounceable H418ov21.C), and what an improvement! Somehow Mr. Vengeance managed to incorporate that lunar black metal feel from Drawing Down The Moon with dance beats and trip hop and form them into songs (and I do mean fully differentiated songs) that are, for the most part, totally outside of the black metal genre. AND this came out in 1995! Definitely ahead of it's time and an album that I think has aged particularly well.

The Ash Eaters

Seeing as how the year is almost out, I'm gonna take a break from doing German posts and focus on the year that was in music....culminating in a Top 10 list of course!!
The dude from Brown Jenkins sent me a demo of his new band earlier this year, and I neglectfully forgot to post it...seems he's been quite busy cuz already a second demo is hittin the interwebs, so I thought what the hell, I'll just post both of them! Ash Eaters is a new project, but not wholly separated from the Jenks in sound and aesthetic...Audially projecting the Lovecraft tradition of terror through non-Euclidian geometry…angles that are just all wrong. This is music that is just all wrong, but indeed all the better for it. I wonder how Jenks composes? Does he do the Jarzombek thing and write out obtuse chord structures only to invert and twist them with malevolent pleasure? Or is he in communication with the great Cthulhu cult letting the telepathic utterances of the dreaming dead infiltrate into his own subconscious? Maybe a little bit of both haha!!

Ingurgitating Oblivion - Voyage Towards Abhorrence

On this daze of thanx, as you ingurgitate yourself into oblivion on your fried brined roast and butter-infused giblets, feast your ears on this turkey...an overflowing cornucopia of Cryptopsy-esque slam-tech-vortexian death. Sure to put a smile on your loved ones faces' and turn them into a quivering pile of smashed pertaters.

Dark Millennium - Diana Read Peace

A band seemingly lost in the sands of time...only together a few short years and releasing 2 full lengths before disbanding in '93. Their first album Ashore the Celestial Burden is an INCREDIBLE melodic death metal album...leads are EVERYWHERE lush and gorgeous and beautiful. Not only that, but the riffs retain a technical thrash edge a la Dark Angel...it's almost like being in guitar heaven for an hour.
That said, I actually prefer their follow up album from '93, the intriguingly titled Diana Read Peace (I'm guessing named after Diana Roman goddess of the hunt, but who the hell knows!) This one is much more rock-oriented than it's predecessor...approaching a Jesus Lizard meets Angel Rat era Voivod sound draped in a cult death metal aesthetic. The sound is spacey and bold creating dynamix that are faaar outside of typical death metal. At times the album starts to morph into a weird darkened-folk jam which makes me want to call DRP the death metal version of Comus's First Utterance, as ridiculous as that sounds (but imagine such a thing, it would be great, wouldn't it!!!) Take the incredible Pandemonium...the building and layering of sounds in this song is unconstrained and reaches emotive heights that are incredibly moving.
DRP is an album that you kind of have to live with for a while...a grower not a shower if you know what I mean...but do give it a shot, because it's charms are sure to delite and titillate even the most stubborn of death metal fans.

Gravity - The Window To The Unknown

Sci-fi grinding madness that has some wonderfully alien riffing...Gravity mix it up a bit with clean guitar passages and unpredictable song structures...Czech out the grim head-destroying cycle of insanity that is the last 3 minutes of Suffocate Yourself. Holy Shit!!!

Abigor - Satanized (A Journey Through Cosmic Infinity)

Abigor have never released a bad album...just albums of varying degrees of greatness. Satanized is one of their stronger efforts for sure, in fact for a while I thought it was their swansong as they broke up soon after its release (thankfully they got back together and recorded the stunningly ballsout Fractal Possession).
You can chart Abigor's career much as you can chart the progression of civilization. Abigor began in the forest (Verwustung), man began in the forests...gathered into feudal groups during the Middle ages (medieval themes of Nachthymnen through Channeling the Quintessence of Satan)...and after some technological advancements reached out into the cosmos (this album and thereafter).
Never had Abigor been this technical in their approach, veering at times towards math metal territory. One may at times get the impression that this is the black metal version of Calculating Infinity.
Don't fight the chaos, just sit back and let the convoluted guitar work wash over you, beckoning you into the polluted morass of an erupted supernova...the entropic din of a maelstrom reaching beyond this terrestrial realm; probing the neutrinos of ascendance for the Evil that lurks among the stars.
